Life after retirement

Usually during weekend I will call my parent to tell them I will bring the kids to their house, then we can go shopping and dinner.

Before the bakery closing down, they always at home, and now? after retired so many time they not at home, call their handphone no service. Then later found out from younger sister B our parent have gone for one day trip to don’t know where already.

Then three weeks ago I called them, and again, nobody home, and again, handphone no service — my mom have gone to Penang visit her sister, my dad have gone visit friends.
Great, without telling me.

Then after two days my mom came back from Penang, my uncle (mom’s sister’s husband) passed away, then she and my dad gone to Penang, again.
They left on Friday morning, I called them on Saturday night, no service, called home, B said they still in Penang.
Called them on Monday, still not home yet, then call B’s handphone…ta da da… found where my parent is –

They left Penang on Monday, my dad drive his old van head east to Baling.

6 days later they finally home, and update to me–

From Baling my parent bought a map and a magnify glass, read the map, guessing the name of the places, to find where they should follow to get to east coast. Both of my parent only know name of places by Chinese, so two of them like playing word puzzle to get those name out (I actually also the same, I baru found out Kampong Koh is 甘文阁, a place I have been knowing since very young).

Then in a lao-yah (lousy) inn in Baling, my dad some more wander can the old van tahan this long journey, and he also mistaken Kota Tinggi as Kota Bahru, so the map stated from Penang to Kota Tinggi is 800+-km, he was worried about the condition of the van, then suddenly realised our peninsular from the top to the bottom baru 900+-km, how come from Penang to east coast will be 800+-km? Then look again…Oh…Kota Bahru…not Kota Tinggi…hehehe…(Listen to my dad till here, I can imagine he scratch his white short hair laughing sheepishly)

From Baling they head to Gerik, stop at the Tasik Temenggor for the scenic view, then head to Jeli, passed by Tanah Merah, through Machang, arrived at Kota Bahru. Then from Kota Bahru head south to Terengganu, Paka (of casue) visit Ah Gong (dad’s uncle), then head to Kemaman for sefood, then Kuantan where his cousin brother and sister staying. Then follow the new highway back to KL.

One whole week.

One whole week I Know they are in east coast, but don’t know the exact location.

During that week Earthtone called me:
“Where are this two old people? I have been trying to call them, couldn’t find them.”

“They gone to Penang because …”

“Oh…”

“But then now they are in east coast, but don’t know where.”

“Waliao…this two old people…hope they don’t get lost in the jungle.”

The last weekend as usual I called them again…nobody answer call, again, handphone, no service, again.

Called B, she told me they have off to Bali that morning! They will be back by tomorrow.

Wa liao… life after retirement sure is good huh.

Anyway they better enjoy now, otherwise they have to jaga baby for Earthtone from October onward, hahaha…see where they can run.

Your parents are clearly not the type who stays at home and jaga roses and watch astro. Many retirees have this need to keep being physically active, and they like their kids to understand them. The best thing you can do now is to show them you do.

it is not the phone company’s problem lar, they use Digi, the coverage is good, but my dad always off the phone and forgot to switch on, or forgot to bring battery charger, so mah no contact lor.

Fishtail, Just like when I was young I like to travel around, my paretn never stop me, but they always wanted to know my where about, and I always reluctant to tell them, and now? good, they do the same to me …hahaha…but I glad they find their own fun, rather than sit in the house doing nothing.
