We went to Carrefour recently, when I passed by the milk powder section, to my surprise all the milk powder tins are being chained with a security tag, every tin locked with a plastic wrap steel wire ended with a security tag.
I usually see the security tag on cloths, DVD, books etc., I don’t feel anything when I see those, but this one on the milk… who steal it? steal for who? A young one who is hungry.
Mixed feeling… it is wrong to steal, but when a young one in the family is hungry, the adult resort to steal when she/he can’t afford it.
Then I remember a story my dad once told me…
When my dad was very young, the live was difficult for him and my grandfather, grandmother passed away when my dad was 4, so grandfather alone mind the ladang, plant some veggie and rear chicken, their usual meal was sweet potatos, or some chipped rice boil to porridge.
Every month when grandfather got money, he will go to a relative’s store to get some rice. And at that time the way to measure rice was use a container scoop the rice, then even the top with a blade. And this relative used a slightly curve blade to even the top of the container, so the top instead of flat, will be curve in a bit, cheat the buyers to give less rice.
My dad said one day grandfather came back, asked my dad is he wants a bowl of white rice? My dad said that was a dream to have white rice then, of course he wants. Then my grandfather took out a small bag show to my dad — white rice. My grandfather stole from the relative when he had gone to town.
My father said that was the best rice he had had.
Treasure what we have in our bowl.

wow…..nice story…!!!
see, nowadays, kids always waste food… we shud appreciate that we have rice to eat….
kesian those kids who dunhave food..
>> Milly, yah don’ waste food.
Dunno why I want to say I’m so proud my grandfather stole the rice.. ??
>> ET, yah, be proud to him.
come to think of it… is amazing those greedy people are living in mansions and crying for more gaoment contracts while there are still people living in poverty and cannot afford to feed their children… what kinda world are we living in???
p/s: maybe those who stole are some stingy yet well to do people
>> Egghead, I actually read newspaper many time about odd job parents stole in the supermarket, baby cloths, toys, milk powder, colour pencils etc. it broke my heart.
yes, there are greedy rich people too, some of them don’t steal, but they go to the paed clinic, asking for free formula sample, the more the better, and if they steal, they steal something else, and usually not for the kids, but for themselve.
Grandfather = Malaysia Robin Hood ?
Agreed with Milly, should not waste food.If you cant finish, order less.
>> Tom, Robin Hood? LOL… yah.
Treasure what we have in our bowl, and don’t take things for granted.
>> Greenapple, 常记于心。
Yah, I saw those security tags too, asked the cashier in surprised and she says there’s cases of ppl stealing. Only sometimes, its not only the poor who steal but the unscrupulous as well.
>> MG, we can never know how those greedy mind work.
Very true..
I know an Indo maid who works in the office.. cannot afford milk powder.. baby 2 weeks old already give him nestum..
I don’t know why she didn’t breast feed though.
>> Zara’s mama, I don’t know why she didn’t breast feed though, you have no idea how the formula milk TV commercial or advertisement have drill to most of the mother’s head? especially for those lower educated or illiterate, they don’t have the capability to know the truth about breastfeeding, so they think the formula is the only solution.
And even though they did breastfeed, the working enviroment not allow them to continue breastfeed, have you ever seen a nursing room for the female blue collar?
em…
My parent too borrow money and “untung” grocery all the time when I was a kids, but to my memory, I never notice it until my sister told me years ago.
It’s quite difficult in those day that our parent who have many children to raise, with their limited education level, they can only do hard labour. Honestly, those day, we never expect anything from our parent and drinking a bottle of coke is so precious and we slowly sip and sip to the last drop..indeed, I totally understand what your father meant.
Now, the coke just don’t taste the same.
>> BT, yah, just like twinsdad told me when they was young, my MIL will cut the luncheon meat very thin, so enough for all of them, he told me when I sliced the luncheon met in thick piece ;).
Very touching story
The tin so big size also can steal ar, very pro wor.
>> 1+2mom, yah, I wonder how they did it too.
Thumbs up for ur grandpapa!
I too noticed dat they have these security tags on the tins of milk powder. But won’t it be easier to steal the refills (in packets) cos those tins of milk powder are not small tins. Funny hor? And what about other tinned/canned foods leh? *roll eyes* *wondering*
>> Tracy, you raise this Q to the supermarket manager lor, then next time we go we see the soft pack also got the tag liao :P.
Sad. This should not happen if everyone breastfeed… My gynae told me the rate of Chinese breastfeeding is still very low, despite all these effort.
>> Suzette, not every mother have the mentality lor, and sometime I feel like it is kind of like religion, you believe it you have it, you don’t believe it you wouldn’t see it.
if you hear the horror stories about stealing milk powder you also wun believe it. The security tag is placed there to avoid theft for those sydicate. Got “preganant” women will stuff the milk powder in their “tummy” and walk away. Before this, we used to put chop on on the tin to avoid theft but its not work cause you can see some of the smaller shops selling the milk powder tin with carrefour logo.
But even with security tag also people manage to steal the milk powder. Imagine, the loss for one store for a security tag which costs RM2 per tag is about 5-10 units a day!
>> Ice_Queen, my oh my… now I know… wha… I want to see also how they hide the tin in their “belly”, any chance? then i can blog about it and make a correct statement :P.
