Parenting | 笔者: Twinsmom
My girls really eat like Chinese, they love rice. They very use to the home cooking, which is usually rice with veggie and meat, some time with soup. Pasta and pastry also accepted, but rice on the top of their list, they can eat plain rice without any dish. Then beside the lunch and dinner, they snack with cookies, bread, cheese, fruit, pancake or any of my experiment *ahem*.
I hardly give sweets and junk food at home, only those decorative sprinkles on the bread or cookies, or sometime we will get some Smarties once or twice a month. Beside this the only “sweets” they have are the chewable vit. C and DHA tablets.
I have been very strict on the girls’ diet since they start solid, the first year strictly no salt in meals, and no sweets, let alone potato chip and soft drink (not even Ribena). So whenever we was out dining, they will have their own meal I cooked for them, no softdrink or outside food at all.
But when they passed their 1st birthday I start loosen up the string, they can have something others than home cook meal under our watchful eyes. But still no sweet, chip and soft drink.
I can’t exactly remember when they started having sweets (they have their first lollipop two months ago), they can have a sip on our soft drink during dine out, and have a few potato fries when they reach 2 years old.
Till now even though I let them have chicken nuggets, fries, soft drink, lollipop etc when we are out shopping or vocation, but I still don’t keep all this foods at home, to me home cook food always better than the foods outside. So the sweets become something special for them, only when we are not at home.
Some relatives think we are too strict on their diet, but seriously, they can choose what they want to eat when they go to school, that will be something not up to me to decide. So now this first few years are the time for me to cultivating their taste, if they use to sweet and salty foods now, then their taste bug will get even more and more “hunger” for those taste in the future.
We got payoff for the first two years of hard work, the girls eat everything, but never too ‘addicted’ to it, too salty or too sweet they also don’t like it. And I tried to give them Ribena, they just took a few sip, that’s all. They will like to sip a bit of Coke, but if we don’t give, they also never fuss about it.
So, at home mommy decide what they eat. Outside the house, they can choose what they want.

Thanks for this post ! It’s very useful and informative for me at this stage of baobao’s growth.
>> ET, youn can call me when you need help ;).
im always on my pc at thiss time to read ur post…. after read ur post, then i can go to sleep…. and dream bout ur food or anything nice… keke.. dream bout u?? wahha…
erm…maria, u r correct, last time mum also didi what u did now..!! mom always make home made food… seldom go out eat lar… go out also got any big occasion…until now.. im dunlike rice.. but i like the vege and meat or soup…. i always tell my dad “im not fan tong” whenever he ask me why i dun1 eat rice… ekkeke….
to make the children stay healthy, the 1st thing should start from mummy… really..!!
>> Milly, 病从口入嘛。所以要小心。
My sentiments exactly ..Twinsmom..!
>> Mamabok, can see your Chloe eat well too.
Very guilty after reading your post… Weekdays we eat at my in-law’s and weekend we always dine-out becoz i lazy to cook lor. LLS starting drinking soft drinks since few months old
>> J, being working mom there is a lot of situation not up to you to control, if I am working I don’t think I will cook during the weekend too :D, suppose for resting, not for cooking, and let alone cleaning the kitchen after cooking :P. softdrink really not good for toddler, I can compromise to those Yeo’s herbal tea, but not corbohydrate drink :P.
haha! I am a bad mom too! I only cook once a week, but my girl still can eat home cook food at nanny’s house.
I gave YChing sips on soft drinks and cold drinks and eat our table food since she was 7-8 mths old, but the quantity is very little lah.
>> Jefferene, you all make me feel bad lar, everyone say they are bad mother… hehehe… last time I so wish to give them a sip or two too, to settle them down mah, otherwise how to eat with two ka-ka-cau-cau at the dining table? but in the end we didn’t give, we master the art on handle them — we eat very fast.
cute “puppies”!
chilren’s diet really very important… but we cannot be too strict also… afterall… they are still children
>> Egghead, guess girls easy to handle :P. I not too strict until… they reach three , 好忍得。
if I am SAHM, i’ll restrict their diet too, too bad i m not!
Both my girls have their junk food/sweets when they not even 1!
>> Jesslyn, yah, if the kid not under own care very difficult to control their diet, but anyway… if they are healthy and active, no need to worry lor.
Wow…so healthy ar? Long life for sure. Err…need to play some Tai Chi too..
>> Tom, they did play tai-chi wor… when I need them to do something (keeping their toys), they will play tai-chi with me… “wait ah… wait ah…” pick up the toys with very slow motion, I think they are master.
I was strict with them for the first year only, (no salt or seasoning in my cooking) no outside food especially fast food and soft drinks after that……. guilty! Every weekend makan fast food and hubby likes to feed them with chocolate cake and ice creams cos he’s a choc fan mah.
>> MG, not bad lar, at least first year you did well. actually chocolate and ice cream I still OK with it, chocolate still better than just plain sugar and colouring, and ice cream is dairy, so I like to give the girls too :P.
Alamak, I feel very guilty leh. When Destinee was in the care of her nanny, I don’t know what she gave her. She loves sweets, chocs and soft drinks. Arrrgghhh!!! But now (under my and maid’s care) I do restrict her from taking junk food but she still craves for them every now and then.
Ei, I love ur ‘dog house’. U call dat a dog house? Wait until u see Destinee’s. With all her soft toys, blankets, pillows and bolsters but it’s very comfy, don’t u think so?
>> Tracy… ai yoh… why I make mothers feel bad meh? *guilty*, crave for sweets? give mashmollow lor, not too sweet mah.
oh… i love jumping into their dog house, but always kena scold
… they say I too big for their house.
Twinsmom, Spot on man. I also do the same. My boy who’s almost 3 very poor thing wan, never had ice-cream or gassy drink before, Ribena maybe 3 times (at host’s house) and I warned the caregiver not to give him sweets ever. But dun know why Doctors themselves like to give away sweets. The Kementerian must do something lah.
>> Thunder, yah… I feel so awkward too leh… last time when they just about 1 year old, visit the paed, the paed gave them sweets, aiyah… my heart grumble “aren’t the pead suppose to know mah… too young can’t have sweet…” LOL…
Ice- cream should be OK lar for three years old, it is dairy mah, I gave to the girls some time as a treat.
u r absolutely right.
but not many ppl can do it… nowadays, many parents r working, they dun have much time to do this.
sigh…
>> Cming, yup, I consider myself very lucky, can stay home take care of them :).
very strict mama…
Wonder how he know how wine taste like??
I am regret about started Brayden to drink juice and now he don’t like to drink water.(but my juice is always mix with half water,, sometime it taste Yukky than just having water)
He started sweets about 3 (a very funny story about his first lollipop story, talk about this later) and we never introduce softdrinks. Somehow he don’t know where he got the idea…., everytime we test him if he want a sip,, he will said, “No, I don’t want this, it’s taste like wine, not for kid!”
>> BT, LOL… coke taste like wine? not surprise, my friend’s son said the coke taste like medicine!!!
juice still OK what, better than soft drink or Ribena.
It’s good training I must say.
It’s the same for me with Zara. No salt or suger before 1. When she’s older, let her drink some Vitagen or Ribena once a day. The rest of the time is water.
I don’t stock up on junk food at home too, and at home she’s always having home cooked meals, when we’re out, we normally let her have steam fish, fish ball, steam tofu or egg.
She hasn’t taken any sweets yet. As a treat, we give her nuts or choc.. better for the teeth and diet.
>> Zara’s mama, we both have the same method huh? I being first time mom actually quite paranoid on bringing up the kids, read a lot of books, then also too much of books, sometime I tend to forget about “naturally” LOL… but after three years of “practise” I think I am OK now, not as paranoid like last time (I steam their plate and spoon in the Avent steriliser LOL).
Jo also loves plain rice. Eat and eat, hehe, just like mummy, 很容易养!
